友人学校経営者の引退
昨日、カナダのPLIという学校を経営していた友人Robynからメールが届いた。
メールのタイトルは「FYI-interesting development」。
実は彼女と共同経営者の夫のBobaは、今年1月に自分の学校を、KAPLAN Aspectという大手教育機関に譲って、業界はあっといわせた。
彼女らが作った学校PLIは、バンクーバーで最も歴史のある学校の1つで、10年ほど前にトロント校もオープンして、質がいい学校として、世界中のエージェントから慕われていた。
Robynは現在のカナダの英語学校連盟の元になったCLCという団体の会長をとして活躍していた。
私も10年以上前から、縁あって親しくさせてもらっていて、彼女らが来日した際は、自宅に招待したりもしていた。また私がバンクーバーに行った時は、彼女らの邸宅(凄く大きかった！）に訪問したりもした。（そういえば前回会ったのは、モントリオールのカンファレンスの時だった)
日本人以上にワーカホリックだった彼女が引退なんて････ 寂しいけど、自分がここまで育てあげた学校を譲って、早期引退。やっぱり「欧米か？」。彼女らのこれからの人生に幸多からん。

Friday was a very, very odd day for Boba and me. It was our
last day at PLI and we are now officially retired!
Thursday evening we had drinks with the PLI Vancouver staff
and they presented us with a PLI diploma for 1040 weeks of
super intensive English (20 years X 52 weeks). A nice evening.
Friday was a bitter-sweet day as we packed up the office and
received many visits and emails from various staff. Pleasant
to see so many flowers and cards outside of a funeral!!
Tuesday is a national holiday here (Canada Day) and many
people are also taking off the Monday to make a rare 4-day
weekend. The current mood is festive with so many people on
holiday and the sunny weather finally upon us. Wednesday is
when we will probably finally realize that our lives truly
have changed. It may be tough at first to lead unstructured
lives, but if we work diligently I think we can master it!
I know that I will no longer have to agonize over whether to
get a Blackberry or, when I book a hotel room, check first for
high speed internet over other amenities. Some of our future
plans are fixed, some are quite unstructured. Probably lots of
unexpected things that we cannot foresee just now will unfold.
I will miss seeing many of my conference buddies; however, the
changes probably won’t hit us right away.
What I do know for now is that the weather is brilliant, we
are experimenting with various different types of champagne
and that all of Canada will be setting off fireworks to help
us celebrate on Tuesday night.
You can’t beat that for starters!
